Meet Our Pastor

Pastor Richard D. McCreary, II, Ph.D. was born in Evergreen, Alabama.  He is the son of the late Mr. Richard D. McCreary, Sr. and Leodia P. McCreary.  On May 14, 1967 he was licensed to preach by the First Baptist Church of Evergreen, Alabama, Rev. H.J. Hawkins, Pastor.  He was ordained March 1, 1970, by the Rockhill Baptist Church of Carbondale, Illinois where he served as interim Pastor until 1971.

Pastor McCreary graduated from Conecuh County Training School of Evergreen, after which he attended Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Florida receiving the Bachelor of Science degree in 1966.  He received a Master of Arts degree in 1970, from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1974, from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.  In 1985, he received a Master of Divinity from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Lombard, Illinois, where he also completed work for the Doctor of Ministry degree.

Pastor McCreary was formerly a teacher in the public school systems of Georgia and Alabama.  For twenty-four years, he was employed as Professor of Composition at Governors State University in University Park, Illinois, he retired in 1996.  He was also employed as Adjunct Professor of Preaching at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Pastor McCreary is a member of the Greater New Era District Association of Chicago and Vicinity, Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Psi, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternities.  He was also a staff writer for The Worker (a missionary and educational quarterly publication).  He is the founder of the New Covenant Theological Institute and the New Covenant Christian Academy (grades PreK through 12) and currently serves as Executive Director.

Pastor McCreary has been the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding community service and leadership.   He was the winner of the State of Iowa Award for Composition and the Clapp Memorial Award for Composition.  In 1984, he was voted Professor of the year at Governors State University.  Most recently, he was bestowed with The Carter G. Woodson Award.

Pastor McCreary is married to his college sweetheart Barbara J. Pearson-McCreary M.D.  She is an attending physician in the Department of emergency medicine at Christ Hospital, Oak Lawn, Illinois.  They are the parent of Angela D. McCreary-Raybon, Nicole R. McCreary-Casmey, and Richard D. McCreary, III.  Drs. Barbara & Richard McCreary are also the proud grandparents of six.
